Advanced Cisco ISR 1000 Series Routing

The Cisco C1161X-8P belongs to the Cisco 1000 Series Integrated Services Routers and is engineered for high-performance connectivity in small and medium-sized branch environments. The platform provides 8 integrated Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, plus 2 Gigabit Ethernet WAN interfaces, including one copper/SFP combination interface and one copper Gigabit Ethernet interface.

The "X" model designation provides 8 GB DRAM and 8 GB flash, enabling additional application-hosting and advanced software capabilities compared with the standard 4 GB configuration. Cisco positions the 116x platform as its highest-performance ISR 1000 option for small branches and remote offices.

WAN and LAN Connectivity

The C1161X-8P provides flexible wired connectivity for branch networks. Its eight Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports can connect local users and network devices, while the two Gigabit Ethernet WAN interfaces provide connectivity toward service providers, upstream routers or other network infrastructure.

One WAN interface combines copper Ethernet and SFP connectivity, allowing supported SFP-based WAN connections where required. The second WAN interface provides a dedicated copper Gigabit Ethernet connection.

SD-WAN and Network Performance

The Cisco C1161 platform supports Cisco SD-WAN and provides high-performance encrypted connectivity for distributed enterprise networks. With Cisco IOS XE, the router can be deployed as part of centralized SD-WAN architectures and managed according to enterprise networking policies.

According to Cisco's 17.9 performance specifications, the C1161 platform provides 1,889 Mbps SD-WAN IPsec throughput at 1400-byte packets and 595 Mbps SD-WAN IPsec throughput using IMIX. It supports up to 200 SD-WAN overlay tunnels.

In autonomous mode, Cisco specifies up to 1,765 Mbps IPv4 forwarding throughput using IMIX and 518 Mbps multi-tunnel IPsec throughput using IMIX.

Memory and Application Hosting

The C1161X-8P is the enhanced memory version of the C1161 platform, providing 8 GB DRAM and 8 GB flash. This configuration supports application-hosting capabilities and provides additional resources for advanced branch networking and security workloads.

Cisco specifies scalability of up to 800K IPv4 routes, 700K IPv6 routes, 100K NAT sessions and 4K VRFs for the C1161X-8P platform. The platform also supports up to 1.6K ACLs per system and 4K IPv4 ACEs.

Compact Branch Office Deployment

With its compact form factor, high-speed Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and enterprise-grade routing capabilities, the C1161X-8P is designed for desktop, wall-mounted and other space-conscious branch deployments. Cisco also supports mounting options for the C1160 family including desktop, wall mounting and DIN rail mounting.

The router operates from a universal 100–240VAC, 50–60Hz external power source and uses a 12VDC output. Its compact dimensions of approximately 4.19 × 27.43 × 19.94 cm and weight of approximately 1.58 kg make it suitable for locations where conventional full-size enterprise routers may not be practical.
